Hi again everyone,
Thanks again to GK, Ali, Tattel, Igo, Jojo, and Jonny for attending last Saturday's meeting. Thanks as well to Lex and Edwin for being with us through technology. PJ actually also wanted to join via phone-patch, but we weren't able to arrange for it anymore. Special thanks to Jonny for hosting us, complete with juice, turon, and lasagna!
Toward the end of the meeting, we were all very happy with how productive it has been. As we were saying, perhaps it just proved that it was indeed about time to start the conversation on this. The topic was ripe for conversation from the very start!
Attached is the minutes of the meeting [edit: available upon request], and Igo deserves the credit for that. We began with a discussion on the value/ importance of forming a Sibol alumni group. Based on the discussion on this segment, here's my first crack at pinning down what the group's Vision, Mission, and Objectives could be. What do you think about this draft articulation?
Vision: Sibol alumni that continue to live out Sibol values individually and as a group
Mission: Create integral opportunities for the alumni to reconnect with and support each other, Dulaang Sibol and its related activities
Objectives:
1. Build a vibrant community among the alumni for mutual support and continued growth
2. Coordinate alumni efforts to support the activities of current Sibol and the Sibol-initiated foundations
3. Coordinate alumni efforts to preserve and spread the legacy of Mr. Pagsi
After discussing the value/ importance of forming a Sibol alumni group, we spent a lot of time (the bulk of the meeting, actually) exploring the potential we see in harnessing the relationship between the alumni and current Sibol/ the Foundations/ Mr. Pagsi. After trying to imagine what can go into that relationship from both ends (what the alumni can provide to Sibol/ the Foundations/ Mr. Pagsi and vice-versa), we attempted to brainstorm on possible activities/ services that can address such a relationship. The list of activities/ services were then categorized into 5 clusters, and team leaders volunteered (or were volunteered! Hehe.) to thresh out the details for each:
Archive
Team Leaders: Jojo & Ali
Component Activities: coffeetable book; collection of photos, music, plays, posters, arrangements, etc.
Online
Team Leaders: Jonny & Igo
Component Activities: dynamic directory (which includes alumni fields of profession/ expertise); sharing of videos/ photos of current Sibol, Mr. Pagsi's reflections and talks, etc.; sharing of Sibol's calendar of activities
Traditions
Team Leaders: Boyet & GK
Component Activities: reviving the summer conservatory; annual homecoming; mentoring/ talks for current Sibol; regular open house where alumni can come home and share experiences and reflections; regular retreat for the alumni; regular geographical alumni gatherings
Resource Mobilization
Team Leaders: Johnny and PJ (Haha! We volunteered the two of you! Hope it's okay.)
Component Activities: fund-raising; fund-management
Successor Search
This is the biggest question mark for now.
The agreement was for the team leaders to thresh out the details for their assigned cluster and the agenda for the next meeting, which will be 4PM on February 20, is to hear each other out.
At the same time, there was a suggestion to send a 'press release' to the broader alumni community, perhaps through the E-groups and Facebook, to give updates on what's happening in order to start the process of generating interest and buy-in for the Sibol alumni group and its consequent activities. It would be a perfect way to sound off the entire endeavor as well. Any volunteers to work on this? :) Separately, perhaps we ought to update Mr. Pagsi directly as well, if only to inform him that we've met already and that we will be inviting him to join the discussions once we have something more solid.
I guess that's all for now. Thank you everyone for your time and ideas, as always!
Best,
-boyet-
Hi Jason,
ReplyDeleteThis is Dondi Dionisio '87; I am currently based in the Los Angeles area, along with a passel of others from the late '80s. I've been stuck between wanting to help while being aware of my time and resource limitations, but at the very least have been following your posts.
One idea that has occurred to me is a combination of the aforementioned Online and Archive ideas --- a Sibol wiki, focused on recording the vast body of creative work by the group (plus anything else, like a copy of the consti, a history, etc.). The wiki format will allow anyone to collaborate and contribute. I also suggest that the wiki should be private to Sibolistas, pending the resolution of any intellectual property issues regarding Sibol creations. We can also do Google Docs, but I think that will get unwieldy very quickly. I would definitely advocate a genuine wiki first.
This is one area where I can contribute --- I can administer the wiki and manage its membership. We can either go with an available free service, or establish our own server. Pros and cons:
- Free service can go live very quickly, but we do not have full control of the information. Also, if we are to maintain account control and privacy, as far as I can tell, Google Sites is the only major one to provide this. I looked into Wikia, but that looks public (to read).
- Our own server would take (a little) more time to set up, but at least we control the data directory, and do stuff like back things up and maintain/preserve replicate copies. This is where I can help; I can set up and maintain a MediaWiki site (MediaWiki is the software behind Wikipedia), but we'll need a server and a data pipe. If someone else can provide those (I don't mind buying the domain and managing the server; I just need help with the hardware), I can do the rest.
I personally would love to have a place to visit where I can read scripts, download lead sheets and recordings, and view scans of posters. Providing this as a wiki then allows the *entire* Sibol community, alum and otherwise, to potentially contribute. Like Wikipedia, this can become an organic place that will permit the rapid accumulation of information with the greatest collaborative synergy.
Anyway, this would be my little "exhale" for the group, if people like the idea. I think just a little more feedback on how to implement the wiki (someone else's service vs. our own) is all I'd need, and if the direction has sufficient consensus, I can move on it. Folks can post to the Yahoo group or e-mail me directly with feedback, assuming the idea gains traction with the group :)
hi dondi, sounds like a great idea. i'll forward your message to the archive/online leads. can you send me an email just so i have yours and be able to CC you. nyu_jason[at]yahoo.com

Dondi,
ReplyDeleteLove the Wiki idea. A decentralized, geographically-unlimited headquarters for all our "stuff" is the way to go.
hey dondi, lionel, and dave,
ReplyDeletejust got home from our mini sibol ny dinner/gathering/meeting. one of the items on the wishlist was something along the lines of the wiki/archive idea. so yup, let's definitely do it.
my question is: if we go the own server route, what does getting the server and data pipe entail? are there cost implications, etc.? let me know. (i do have server space at startlogic for my website. i don't know if that's any use as i'm not that familiar with the backend.)
the wiki sounds like something that would be great to have especially that we've been talking archiving for the longest time. so hopefully it's something we get up and running soon. (i've asked for a pdf of the consti from a recent sibol grad)
